What is Pain Medicine?

Pain Medicine is a recognized medical specialty that requires years of specialized training. Pain Medicine incorporates a number of treatment approaches, such as anethesiology, neurology, neurological surgery, orthopedic surgery, physiatry and psychiatry, to make sure that an individual's pain symptoms are evaluated and properly treated. Pain Medicine practitioners, including those at Integrative Treatment Centers, are certified by the American Academy of Pain Medicine (www.painmed.org).

What is Pain Surgery?

Pain Surgery is a sub-specialty that is dedicated to the surgical treatment of painful conditions.  This can involve minimally invasive (i.e. surgeries performed through a small incision) or open.  Unlike structural spine surgery where the focus is on stability (i.e. carpentry), pain surgery has a focus on function (i.e. electrical), although it sometimes involves altering spine or other structures to accomplish this.
